What is Independent Living?

Independent LivingIndependent living housing is available in numerous different forms, and the accommodations and communities that comprise senior independent living facilities can range from age restricted apartments to luxurious villas on the campus of a retirement community. Most independent living housing communities do require their residents to be able to perform the daily activities of living, such as bathing, dressing, and meal preparation, on their own. The ideal candidate for this type of community will require little to no medical assistance.

The philosophy behind senior independent living is to provide a community where an older adult can maintain their independence, while still recognizing that they are aging. The goal of independent living housing is to provide a resident with an active lifestyle that still provides security and peace of mind. Most senior independent living communities provide a comprehensive range of social, educational, and recreational activities for their residents. While security and peace of mind are important, more and more senior citizens are choosing independent living facilities according to the various amenities that the community offers.

In some communities, a resident will not have to worry about home maintenance, housekeeping, or transportation. Meal preparation may also be provided. The housing that is provided in these communities is designed specifically with the needs of aging seniors in mind. For example, it would not be uncommon to see handrails in the bathroom or walk up ramps on the exterior of a home, rather than stairs. Most of these facilities also provide a 24 hour emergency response system.

How Are Independent Living Communities Paid For?

In most instances, independent living housing must be paid for through private funding. Depending upon the particular independent living community a person chooses, the cost of the facility may be subsidized by certain state or Federal programs. It is also quite possible to find senior independent living facilities that charge fees according to a sliding scale, which makes it a much more affordable option for individuals who are on a fixed income.

How Are These Facilities Regulated?

Due to the fact that senior independent living facilities do not offer medical care or assistance with ADL’s (activities of daily living), they are not required to be licensed or regulated with state or Federal agencies. There is no established, formal regulation process for these communities.
