The housing that is provided in these communities is designed specifically with the needs of aging seniors in mind. For example, it would not be uncommon to see handrails in the bathroom or walk up ramps on the exterior of a home, rather than stairs. Most of these facilities also provide a 24 hour emergency response system.

How Are Independent Living Communities Paid For?

In most instances, independent living housing must be paid for through private funding. Depending upon the particular independent living community a person chooses, the cost of the facility may be subsidized by certain state or Federal programs. It is also quite possible to find senior independent living facilities that charge fees according to a sliding scale, which makes it a much more affordable option for individuals who are on a fixed income.

How Are These Facilities Regulated?

Due to the fact that senior independent living facilities do not offer medical care or assistance with ADL’s (activities of daily living), they are not required to be licensed or regulated with state or Federal agencies. There is no established, formal regulation process for these communities.
